The BioMedical Science Center Brussels is a center of expertise affiliated with the bachelor program Biomedical Laboratory Sciences (“biomedische laboratoriumtechnologie”) at the Erasmushogeschool Brussel.
The Biomedical Science Center Brussels started in October 2017 and carries out both in-house and on-demand scientific projects in collaboration with bachelor students Biomedical Laboratory Sciences.
As a consequence these projects are confined to the three disciplines within the Biomedical Laboratory Sciences program: Biotechnology, Pharmacy, Clinical & Molecular diagnostics.
Currently, the BioMedical Science Center Brussels has two (in-house) research lines running in collaboration with the VUB:
(1) the implementation of the CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing system in filamentous fungi that are potentially interesting in industrial applications,
(2) the development of a liposome based nanobody delivery system that specifically targets cancer cells.
But the BioMedical Science Center Brussels also performs services and R&D for third parties. We aim to address specific questions coming from the biomedical workfield and/or industry within short-term projects. Examples of past and future services comprise:
- testing the antimicrobial properties of coatings, commissioned by a company
- the development of stable triturations, commissioned by a company
- cloning plasmids for academic research, commissioned by the VUB
Finally, the BioMedical Science Center supports the Open BioLab Brussels that started in September 2016. The Open BioLab Brussels, also an initiative of the bachelor program Biomedical Laboratory Sciences, is a lab that opens once a week. Its goal is to offer everyone with an interest in life sciences and biomedical sciences the opportunity to set-up research projects by providing its laboratory equipement as well as guidance by highly skilled mentors. The Open BioLab provides a place and a platform that interconnects interested, motivated students, staff and/or other stakeholders, creating a vibrant community.
In order to promote the scientific literacy of high school students, we are developing low cost DIY-bio STEAM-kits as well as DIY laboratory tools that can readily be used or set-up in schools. Additionally we are also providing complementary workshops for science teachers and high-school students in the Open BioLab Brussels.
Hereby the BioMedical Science Center Brussels and the bachelor program Biomedical Laboratory Science at the Erasmushogeschool Brussel strives to contribute forming (biomedical laboratory) scientists that are better equipped to the demands of the job market!

Hoewel Vlaanderen de thuisbasis is van één van Europa's belangrijkste biotech valleys, bestaat er geen laagdrempelige bio-incubator voor prototyping, het ontwikkelen van een proof-of-concept of het genereren van preliminaire resultaten.
De meeste bio-incubators zijn zeer geavanceerd, met een overeenkomstige hoge gebruikersprijs en zijn vaak verbonden aan een universiteit of hoogtechnologisch bedrijf. Indien je een idee hebt of een concept dat je wil onderzoeken, maar geen deel uitmaakt van een universiteit of een gevestigd bedrijf, is het redelijk moeilijk om aan jouw onderneming te starten. Dit aangezien spin-offs doorgaans uit een universitaire setting ontstaan als gevolg van voorgaand academisch onderzoek.
Laagdrempelige aanpak
Daarom startte het BioMedical Science Center Brussel een laagdrempelige Bio-Incubator. Voor een faire verloning kunnen beginnende starters hun prototype of proof-of-concept ontwikkelen zonder hun intellectuele eigendom te verliezen.

- Net afgestudeerde Masters en PhD’s in (life) sciences
Waarvoor kun je er terecht?
De laagdrempelige Bio-Incubator biedt niet enkel laboratoriumfaciliteiten aan, maar ook praktische technische ondersteuning. Aangezien het BioMedical Science Center verbonden is aan de opleiding Biomedische Laboratoriumtechnologie kunnen gebruikers van de laagdrempelige Bio-Incubator de hulp van het docententeam en/of studenten inschakelen. Dit helpt om specifieke taken te voltooien en het ontwikkelingsproces te versnellen. Startups worden ook uitgenodigd om hun werk te presenteren aan een gemeenschap van onderzoekers, docenten en studenten binnen EhB, wat mogelijk kan leiden tot een dynamisch proces van brainstormen en het delen van ideeën.
Resultaten
Tiamat Sciences is een kleine start-up, bestaande uit mensen met een wetenschappelijk track record, die een eiwit-expressiesysteem in planten willen opzetten. Ze hadden moeite om een samenwerking met een universitair laboratorium op te zetten en dit om verschillende redenen: of het laboratorium was niet geïnteresseerd omdat het idee van Tiamat niet in hun onderzoeksbereik past, of de prijs om hun faciliteiten te gebruiken was te hoog en bijkomend rezen er steeds problemen omtrent intellectueel eigendom.
Tiamat Sciences gebruikt op dit moment de faciliteiten van de laagdremelige bio-incubator voor de ontwikkeling van hun eiwit-expressiesysteem.
